Striking Teachers Lock Out Council Chairman, Secretary
Members of the Akwanga Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Nasarawa State on Thursday locked up the offices of the chairman and secretary of the Akwanga Local Government Council.The ezekielpress.blogspot.com reports that the teachers staged a protest over non-release of their bio-data capturing forms by the Council Chairman, Mr Abashiya Koto.
The protesters, who converged at the Local Government Education Authority office, carried leaves and placards and obstructed activities at the council secretariat for many hours.
The protesters insisted that the offices would remain locked until their demands were met.
Speaking during the protest, Mr Yarima Yohana, the Chairman of the NUT, said the protest was to demand the release of their bio-data capturing forms.
He said that the welfare of teachers in the area had suffered serious set-back under the current administration in the state.
Yohana said that the government had also nullified the promotion of some teachers in the Local Government for no reason.
He called on the council boss to revise his actions for harmonious working relationship with the union.
Yohana said that “the union would always protect the interest of its members.”
The Secretary of the council, Malam Sani Umar, described the action of the union as unfortunate, expressing the readiness of the council to dialogue with the union.
He appealed for cooperation and understanding from the union to resolve the matter.
