Nurse Killed 38 Patients As She Found Them Annoying
A hospital nurse was arrested on suspicion of killing several terminal patients, in Lugo, northern Italy.
A
female nurse, Daniela Poggiali, was accused of giving her patients high
doses of potassium because she found them or their families annoying
Tests indicated that the pensioner had unusual amounts of potassium chloride in her bloodstream – high doses of which can trigger cardiac arrest. However, there are some difficulties with the investigation as potassium fades from the bloodstream within a few days, making it hard to detect.
Italian police are now investigating 38 deaths, including ten which have been described as ‘very suspicious’. In local reports, one nurse who worked with Poggiali described her as a ‘cold person but always eager to work’. The investigation continues.
Potassium chloride is used to prevent or to treat low blood levels of potassium (hypokalemia). It is used as part of the death penalty in the U.S.
